Diabetes is a serious, life-threatening condition. There are ways to control your diabetes so that the danger is reduced. Here are three lifestyle changes you can undertake today to control your diabetes.

1. Exercise

Everyone should strive to exercise daily, but this is even more important for those with diabetes. In diabetes studies, exercise has been proven to help the body control insulin levels, which is key to diabetes management. When you make it a point to include exercise in your day, your blood sugar levels may stabilize. For this reason, diabetics are encouraged to exercise immediately after eating. Clinical trials have shown that a 15 to 20 minute brisk walk is all that’s needed to help your body optimally process the insulin released after a meal.

Exercise doesn’t need to be strenuous to work. You could also incorporate activity into your day by parking further away from your place of work or shopping destination. If possible, ride your bike to work a few times a week. Use the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Stand up at work as much as possible, or use a stand-up desk instead of a traditional desk. Consider taking up a new sport such as bowling or tennis. Get a buddy to exercise with you, so you can motivate each other to continue being active.

2. Eat a diversified diet

In order to ensure that you consume all the vitamins and minerals that you need to manage your diabetes, eat a diversified diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables. Cook at home from scratch whenever possible. Avoid using added salt and sugar, as clinical studies have shown these to be detrimental to people with diabetes. Skip processed take-out food and opt for on-the-go healthy choices like crudités dipped in guacamole or green smoothies.

3. Reduce alcohol intake

Alcohol contains exorbitant levels of empty calories. In addition, alcohol can cause insulin levels to spiral out of control. Reduce your alcohol intake as much as possible by opting for fruit-infused water. At parties, substitute one glass of water for every other alcoholic beverage.

Your responsibility for your diabetes care doesn’t end when you leave the doctor’s office. Make these three lifestyle changes to give yourself the best possible outcome!
